The biggest blind spot you develop after surviving your first few years as a founder is thinking you’ve outgrown the basics.
Our CFO, Mercy Runo, recently spent three days at an SME training program co-hosted by the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) Nairobi & Kiambu Counties in partnership with GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH) at Bedarin Hotel in Ruiru.
Going in, it’s easy to assume you will mostly rehash familiar concepts. But reviewing foundational frameworks after three years of building a business in the trenches changes your perspective entirely.

Re-evaluating the Fundamentals

When leading technical hardware execution, testing prototypes, modeling energy economics, and running field pilots, founders often get consumed by product development. However, stepping back to reassess core business questions remains critical for long-term survival:

  • Strategic Clarity: What exactly are we building, and who are we building it for?
  • Operational Readiness: Is our enterprise structure ready to support actual scaling?
  • Risk Management: What operational and financial blind spots are we currently overlooking?

Beyond the core modules,covering SWOT analyses, regulatory compliance, and business planning, the primary value came from direct peer exchange.
Engaging with established entrepreneurs across diverse sectors, including beauty, marketing, nutrition, and recycling, offered vital lessons:
