Umeme Sense Wins at the IEEE YESIST12 Competition in Malaysia!

Exciting news from Malaysia!Umeme Sense is thrilled to announce that we emerged as the 2nd place global winner under the WePower Track at the prestigious IEEE YESIST12 (Youth Endeavours for Social Innovation using Sustainable Technology) 2025 competition!

Representing Africa on the global stage, our Co-founder Mercy Sheila Otuko presented Umeme Sense, an intelligent energy monitoring solution transforming how communities engage with renewable energy and climate finance.

Umeme Sense addresses a pressing challenge, the high cost of electricity and upfront investment barriers that limit access to clean energy for many African households and businesses. Our innovation connects solar energy generation to the global Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) market, an emerging $69.1 billion USD industry projected by 2034, allowing communities to monetize clean energy production just like carbon credits.

By unlocking new revenue streams from RECs, Umeme Sense helps make solar power more affordable, sustainable, and accessible, especially in underserved regions.

Key challenges we are solving include:

  • High electricity costs relative to income levels
  • Financing struggles and repayment defaults in solar projects
  • Limited African participation in global renewable energy markets

This milestone is not only a win for our team but also a celebration of African innovation driving global climate action. We are proud to be part of a new wave of technologies making sustainable energy a reality for all.
